Elyria has a large inventory of empty homes in varying degrees of disrepair. We also have a notable homeless population. It is unconscionable that we can allow these two problems to coexist when a solution is right in front of us.
Cities and states across the United States have used grants, landbanks, and other methods to place homeless residents in vacant homes with great success. I would like to introduce a similar program in Elyria and take it one step further: I would like to provide tools and training to these new homeowners to help them rebuild and take pride in their homes while simultaneously learning new skills.
Such a program sounds like a huge undertaking. Fortunately, we have resources available from several cities and states to help us build out a program similar to their own.
